School of Music and Dance (SMD)
The School of Music and Dance is a vibrant community of musicians, artists, performers and scholars, with a deep commitment to education. With over a dozen student ensembles, and extra-curricular groups as well, the opportunities for student involvement are plentiful. Our students work closely with award-winning and world-renowned professionals: the Alexander String Quartet coaches student chamber groups; jazz combos work with international all-stars through the Generations Jazz Program; composition students develop their craft under the tutelage of our fine theory faculty, and get to hear their works performed by the Adorno New Music Ensemble-in-Residence. A variety of concert series help the school in producing almost 200 concerts and recitals each year.
The campus MUNI stop gives students easy access to all San Francisco has to offer - from the San Francisco Opera, Ballet and Symphony to SF Jazz and the jazz clubs of the Fillmore district. Our faculty and students are also active in bringing the arts into the community at large, through extra-curricular programs and workshops offered throughout the year.
We aim to provide our students with the analytical, creative, and technical skills necessary to investigate, compose or choreograph, perform, and teach music or dance in a setting where traditional and innovative approaches are combined to meet the needs of our diverse urban community.
