Two short films by M.F.A. candidates are on display as part of the “Immediate Future” exhibition at the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery. Eirini Steirou’s “Safety Net”and Oscar Bucher’s “Waiting for a Train” are featured in “Immediate Future.” They both study in the Cinema Department. “Safety Net” is a psychological drama about dependability and trust that intercuts between the lives of a married couple and a man faced with an extreme financial burden. The film examines their reactions in the face of betrayal and injustice, which set them on a collision course for disaster. “Waiting for a Train” is a documentary following a man on a journey to the heartland of America, driven by his lifelong love of bluegrass.

The Murphy and Cadogan Fellowships in the Fine Arts are annual awards sponsored by Tthe San Francisco Foundation to assist students in funding their final year of graduate studies. In partnership with the foundation, the Arts Commission Gallery is committed to supporting works by outstanding Bay Area art students through the annual fellowship exhibition. Betti-Sue Hertz, Ellen Oh, Isis Rodriguez and Meg Shiffler juried this year’s awards.

The exhibition is on display through Dec. 12. The opening reception will be held 6–8 p.m. Oct. 9. Admission is free.
