Shakespeare in Central Park, directed by alum Daniel Sullivan

Daniel SullivanAlum Daniel Sullivan, the Tony Award winner who credits SF State for giving him the “theatre bug,” is directing “Twelfth Night” this summer at Shakespeare in the Park in New York City.

Anne Hathaway, Audra McDonald and Julie White star in the production, presented for free in Central Park through July 12.

in The New York Times on June 17, Sullivan discussed how actors must adjust to performing outdoors.

“It’s always a bit of a shock for everyone to go from a rehearsal space into the park, when you realize that about two-thirds of the way up the house, it becomes increasingly difficult to see faces,” Sullivan (B.A., Drama, ’62) said. “Voice becomes everything, and vocal energy becomes everything.”

Sullivan, a six-time Tony nominee, performed in Professor Jules Irving’s Actor’s Workshop—the leading theatre group in San Francisco in the 1950s and 1960s—while attending SF State.
