There is a movement to build permanent, quasi-sovereign nations floating in international waters.

A Wired Magazine article in May includes an artistic conception of what such a nation may look like, as illustrated by alum Valdemar Duran (B.A., Industrial Arts, ’08).

PayPal founder Peter Thiel is one of several Silicon Valley leaders to launch the Seasteading Institute, an organization dedicated to creating experimental ocean communities “with diverse social, political and legal systems.”
