John Calloway, a faculty member and alumnus of the School of Music and Dance, was appointed by Mayor Gavin Newsom to the San Francisco Arts Commission earlier this month.
Calloway will serve in the performing arts (music) position, helping further the commission's extensive set of programs and special projects that incorporated arts into the civic infrastructure of San Francisco.
At SF State, Calloway directs the Afro-Cuban Jazz Ensemble and teaches courses in Latin American music. He is a renowned flutist, performing across the country and alongside legendary musicians like Cuban bassist Israel "Cachao" Lopez. His recording credits as a performer and composer include last year's solo album "The Code" and collaborations with John Santos, Jesus Diaz and Omar Sosa. He travels to Cuba frequently as program coordinator for PlazaCuba, an arts company that offers courses in conjunction with the National School of the Arts in Havana.
