Fall Into Jazz: Afro-Cuban Ensemble/Vocal Jazz
Student vocalists perform with Brazil Vox, a Bay Area-based Brazilian music band. Professor Victoria Neve stops by to play a Thelonious Monk-based piano composition by George Crumb. The Afro-Cuban Ensemble of SF State has a loyal following on and off campus, performing a wide variety of Latin jazz genres, from traditional and folkloric Afro-Cuban styles to the most contemporary sounds.
SF State’s longtime excellence in jazz and world music continues today, as students follow in the giant steps of famed alumni including Cal Tjader, John Handy, Wesla Whitfield, George Duke and Kitty Margolis. This annual festival features three nights of invigorating concerts that showcase the diversity of this truly global, yet uniquely American, art form.
