InterHarmony International Music Festival

InterHarmony logoWell-known soloists and chamber players from around the globe perform and teach talented young musicians.

The free concert series includes performances by cellist Misha Quint, founder and director of InterHarmony, and other renowned musicians, culminating in an orchestral concert conducted by Sidney Harth, former Chicago Symphony concertmaster and former Los Angeles Philharmonic conductor.

The festival at SF State is one of three InterHarmony sessions this year. The others are in Germany. Quint modeled InterHarmony after his well-established Soesterberg Festival in the Netherlands.

Master Classes/Lectures

  • July 2, 4pm: “The Evolution of the Violin Bow: 400 Years of Bows and Bowing.”
    Using bows from her own collection, including the long and short Baroque bows, transitional Classical bow and Tourte bow, Janet Packer explains and demonstrates the fascinating interdependence of technology, musical style and bow technique in music from the 17th to the 20th century. Audience members will have the opportunity to try out the bows.
  • July 6, 4pm: Shirley Givens, violin, presents an informal class on stage presence and projection of ideas.
  • July 7, 4pm: “The Art of Auditioning.”
    Cyrus Ginwala and Sidney Harth present a master class for young string players who wish to audition for major orchestras.
  • July 8, 4pm: Harry Wimmer, cello, presents An informal class on his six-part technique book series, “The Joy of Cello Playing.” Audience participation is encouraged.
